COMPRESSION

Compression is an essential component of Lymphoedema management. It works by applying firm, even pressure on the tissues of the affected area or limb, helping the trapped fluid to flow through the lymph vessels by acting as an extra force for the muscles to work against.

COMPRESSION GARMENTS (Industry standard to reduce oedema)

Compression garments are a tight-fitting garment, such as a sleeve or stocking that help reduce swelling by applying pressure to the affected limb or trunk. As they are tighter at the bottom than they are at the top it creates a gradient pressure that keeps the fluid moving out of the limb. Garments can cater for most areas of the body and can be bought off the shelf or custom made. It is recommended to replace the garments every 4 to 6 months depending on how regularly they are used, severity of oedema, and type of fabric. Many patients buy two garments to have one to wash while the other is worn. Equipment is also available for purchase to assist donning and doffing compression garments.

Compression Bandaging (for acute/severe cases)

BANDAGING IMAGE.jpg

Bandaging for lymphoedema is called multi-layered lymphoedema bandaging (MLLB) and is used for stage 2 and 3; moderate to severe lymphoedema.

Bandages work differently than compression sleeves as they decongest or move the fluid out of the limb rather than just supporting the flow of lymph in the right direction.

While compression garments are effective for mild lymphoedema, more advanced cases initially need the help of the more rigid bandaging. You may be required to attend the clinic daily for 2-3 weeks to change the bandages in order to effectively decongest the affected area before moving into compression garments.

Compression Wrap System (extra easy to apply)

A compression wrap system is a garment that is made up of overlapping, single layers of fabric bands. The fabric bands are applied with Velcro fasteners that are easy to attach over a fabric liner that protects your skin underneath the wrap system. The wrap system works in the same way as other compression garments or bandaging but has a much easier application and is easily adjusted as the limb reduces.
